چکیده

In this second paper, we develop a geometrical method to systematically study the singular perturbed problem associated to slowly modulated two-pulse solutions. It enables one to see that the characteristics of these solutions are strongly determined by the flow on a slow manifold and, hence, also to identify the saddle-node bifurcations and bifurcations to classical traveling waves in which the solutions constructed in part I are created and annihilated. Moreover, we determine the geometric origin of the critical maximum wave speeds discovered in part I. In this paper, we also study the central role of the slowly varying inhibitor component of the two-pulse solutions in the pulse-splitting bifurcations. Finally, the validity of the quasi-stationary approximation is established here, and we relate the results of both parts of this work to the literature on self-replication.

Slowly Modulated Two-Pulse Solutions in the Gray--Scott Model I: Asymptotic Construction and Stability

Two pulse solutions play a central role in the phenomena of self-replicating pulses in the one-dimensional (1-D) Gray–Scott model. In the present work (part I of two parts), we carry out an existence study for solutions consisting of two symmetric pulses moving apart from each other with slowly varying velocities. This corresponds to a “mildly strong” pulse interaction problem in which the inhi...

Slowly-modulated two pulse solutions and pulse splitting bifurcations

Two pulse solutions play a central role in the phenomena of self-replicating pulses in 1-D reaction-diiusion systems. In this work, we focus on the 1-D Gray-Scott model as a prototype. We carry out an existence and stability study for solutions consisting of two pulses moving apart from each other with slowly varying velocities. In the various parameter regimes, critical maximum wave speeds are...

SPOT PATTERNS IN GRAY SCOTT MODEL WITH APPLICATION TO EPIDEMIC CONTROL

In this work, we analyse a pair of two-dimensional coupled reaction-diusion equations known as the Gray-Scott model, in which spot patterns have been observed. We focus on stationary patterns, and begin by deriving the asymptotic scaling of the parameters and variables necessary for the analysis of these patterns. A complete bifurcation study of these solutions is presented. The main mathematic...

Pulses in a Gierer-Meinhardt Equation with a Slow Nonlinearity

In this paper, we study in detail the existence and stability of localized pulses in a GiererMeinhardt equation with an additional ‘slow’ nonlinearity. This system is an explicit example of a general class of singularly perturbed, two component reaction-diffusion equations that goes significantly beyond wellstudied model systems such as Gray-Scott and Gierer-Meinhardt. We investigate the existe...

Homoclinic bifurcations at the onset of pulse self-replication

We establish a series of properties of symmetric, N -pulse, homoclinic solutions of the reduced Gray– Scott system: u′′ = uv2, v′′ = v− uv2, which play a pivotal role in questions concerning the existence and self-replication of pulse solutions of the full Gray–Scott model. Specifically, we establish the existence, and study properties, of solution branches in the (α,β)-plane that represent mul...
